Yes, in Jan./07. Actually you don't need it to get into Canada but you will need it to get back into the U.S.

Actually, from what I understand you will not need an actual passport. They are making a new ID that is pretty much the same as a passport (you need the same information and verification to get it) but it is more like a license. I believe it starts the first of the year.

This new ID thing is only good for travel to Canada, you will need a passport for most air travel (including US territories) outside of continental US

Yes you will need a passport to travel from the US to Canada. Try going to the DHS website http://www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/
they have all of the information that you need regarding the new changes.

I thought it was already in effect, or will be Jan. 1st.

It is for all forms of travel.

I know that the government has issued notices that it will take extra long to get a passport now because of the overwhelming number of people applying.

From what I understand that is mostly for air travel. If you are driving that is effetive in the summer of 07 or as late as 01/01/08.

looks like jan. next year (2007) you'll need if you are traveling by air, and jan 2008 for all travel. (see website)
