The water dish is only about 6 feet away from the tree....And we cant constantly keep it filled because if we leave it filled he drinks it all and then pees all over the house (hes only a puppy). And for the tape and aluminum foil or plastic wrap: ive already tried!

It's ok for the dog to drink the water out of the Christmas tree. It won't hurt him, and it's just a carry over instinct from the days when dogs were pack animals. Just keep filling up the tree everyday. My cats have done the same thing for years.

First of all, don't let him!!!

You can cover the water well on the tree stand with plastic wrap, then put the tree skirt over that. It is a hassle to rewater the tree, but it's worth it to help keep your dog from getting sick!

My cat was doing the same thing til we tried the plastic wrap trick. Also, try putting presents up around the tree, blocking access to the actual well of the tree.

You can't let him drink the icky water, it has all kinds of stuff that will make him sick!

Happy Holidays.

Lol....try secluding an area of the house by putting up a wooden board, or some kind of small fencing to keep the dog in a certain area. You can buy these at stores, specially made to keep pets in a room, but most of my friends just put up boards that are big enough that the dog can't jump over them, but small enough that people can step over them easily.
Or, you could simply just keep him in a room with the door closed, or find a dog cage to keep him in, or have him outside on a leash for as long as you need.

First of all Poodles are not French, the original spelling of the name was Pudel which is GERMAN for puddle, indicative of their water working days. The French acquired the breed and it snowballed from there (the creation of a stereotype I mean) Second of all, any one stupid enough to allow their dogs to only drink Evian water, is too stupid to own a dog.

I would make sure he always has cold clean water with easy acess so he is less incourged to drink from under the tree. Try putting lemon juice or a NON TOXIC matrial that your dog does not like the taste of in the tree water. When you catch him in the act make sure to frown and show how dissapointed you are in him but do NOT say no drinking from the tree water, if you say no to everything it will confuse him No sitting on the couch No chewing on the rug when you do that you give no to many meanings and he will be confused.
Good luck=)

Is there no way you can fasten the skirt so that it will hold?
If not, maybe tape something like foil or paper or something over the opening and pull up a section of it when it's time to rewater? It might be a hassle...

you have to find a way to stop the dog, or get rid of the tree and get an artificial one. tree water has additives and secretions from the tree that can make some dogs deathly ill. the most common problem is it can destroy kidney function. some dogs have no trouble, but why take the chance. christmas tree water can be very dangerous for your dog. try getting a panel gate you can put around your tree also.

Since I took mine to training classes she has learned to "leave it" and I started putting Backing soda in the water, found that helped a lot and she stopped. So with the training and all she doesn't bother the tree anymore...

Your dog is just enjoying a new taste in the water! ;o)

Put vinegar or something in the water or something that stinks to the dog around the tree.

put some red pepper in it. It won't harm him or the tree but he won't do it more than once. I promise. Or you can use duct tape or packing tape and tape off the opening so he can't get to it.
