The Bible does not teach the sinners prayer.
The Bible is quite clear about that and how to become a member of Christ's church (a Christian) and be saved.
Here's what the Bible says:
One cannot become a Christian and be a member of Christ's Church without doing the following:
1) Believe John 3:16
2) Publicly Confess Jesus as the Son of God Matt. 10:32- 33
3) Repent of your sins Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38
4) Be baptized for the remission of sins Mark 16:16, Acts
2:38
5) Live faithfully

Your right in saying that many people beleive they can say a prayer and still live any way you want.
Once you pray, you have to make the changes in your life to start building your relationship with God and start walking out the plans that God has for you. You need to allow the Holy Spirit to move through you.

I agree that people should practice what they preach, but I've read the Bible and the history of the Bible, and I just can't see with all the contradictions how it could be right. It seems Christianity has the most horrible ending of all the religions. For a God who is so loving to sacrifice his son who taught only love, and for that son to return as a warrior to smite sinners and Satan, and for this same loving God to forsake his own creation, this all seems highly hypocritical. There are far too many contradictions in the Bible to list.

the sinner's prayer isn't an exact copied prayer that must be recited word for word. JUST LIKE THE LORD'S PRAYER.
And it is in there. These prayers are just examples of how to pray in situations. The sinner's prayer is for salvation, for anyone not saved. Basically it's this:
Lord, I understand and believe you are God, and sent your Son to die for my sins. I accept your love and grace and admit to my short-commings, and I now place you on the throne of my heart to guide and love me forever.
Pretty humble, right? That's why people don't like the thought of "getting saved". It hurts thier pride.

It is a prayer, not a book of the bible. It incorporates that which is needed to admit you have failed and want forgivness.
Then, if you try.....the fruit will be the proof. But, you are right, most of the world admits to believing in something, but the gangbanger still kisses his cross before the drive-by shoot

He, the Most Holy Father Benedict XVI seemed to be mentioning this today. He mentioned that so many are looking for a "low cost" salavation. Just a prayer, boy is that a GREAT deal.
He said that so many see God as an "obstacle" to their self-fullfillment (which can't actually be realized if you see it as that).

Your analysis of once saved always saved theology is correct. It leads to a watered down cultural Christianity. The book of James discusses how silly it is to say your a believer but live like everyone else.

(Romans 10:8) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
(Romans 10:9) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
(Romans 10:10) For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
