On the same day as the results of a new study were released, showing that 95% of Americans engage in premarital sexual relations, a phenomenon that has remained unchanged since the 1950s (see http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061220/ap_on_re_us/premarital_sex_6), the vatican issues yet another ridiculous press release regarding abstinence (see http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061220/ap_on_he_me/vatican_aids_1).

Why does the pope refuse to acknowledge that condoms exist? What is the basis for this insane position? Why would anyone listen to him?

The pope is doing nothing more than upholding a basic Catholic teaching. According to the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, sexual intercourse is something that is to take place in the context of marriage and under circumstances that are open to the possibility of procreation. By this teaching, sex outside of marriage, birth control, and homosexual sex are all considered sins. (Not saying I agree or disagree or that it's right or wrong - just stating facts.)

I have no doubt that Benedict knows the state of things in the world and knows about the prevalence of birth control and how condoms can help stop the spread of HIV. The bottom line is that part of his job is to uphold the teachings of his faith. (In case you are curious, for a teaching like this to change, it'd take a lot more than the simply say-so of ANY pope.)

I think the position a pope has is insane and as it is generally a very old man never married he has no idea of the real world and relationships. it is sad they would rather risk the spared of aids than advercat condoms.

And if the study showed that suicide rate was high, would that make sucide right? Just because a bunch of people do something, doesn't make it right. It's harder to stand against what popular opinion wants to roll over and allow. I say, "Bravo Pope Benidict XVI for standing up for what you believe in!"

It's not insane to set a goal, even when you know that the goal will never be reached.
I for one, think everybody should control their appetite and have a perfect classical body. Because I think they should in no way makes me believe they will.

One of the way of religion to control people is through guilt. Whatever people like to do often, religion says it's bad. They do it anyway then religion tells them "come to me, I will save you etc..."

Duh ... because he is right? It's a pity that so many are so indoctrinated into the hedonistic, self-destructive pagan ideas of our modern society that that can't even regognize truth when it stares them straight in the face.
