It depends on how dark your natural color is to begin with. There are 10 color levels to hair, and I am aware of some simple color products out there that can "lift" (remove pigment from hair) 5 whole levels. The reason your hair is turning orange is probably that you need to go through a double process to get the color you desire, meaning you will likely have to have it bleached to a certain point, and then add color or a rinse to get the outcome you want. Hair has to go through all ten levels to get to the lightest color...it sounds like whatever you were using only had enough lifting power to get you to the orange level--sounds like it just needs a little push. So I recommend bleach, then color. I also highly recommend going to a professional, this definitely isn't something you can handle by yourself at home. Good luck!

This will require a double process:
1. Bleach the hair to lighten the color
2. Add toner to get the bleached hair the right shade of blonde.
Definitely do not try this at home if you are unfamiliar with the process. Go to a salon. Expect to be there 1 1/2 - 2 hours and spend $60 - $100+ depending on the extent of the highlights and how long your hair is.

Going from dark to light is NOT coloring it is removing color. It is a bleaching process . Although I rarely say this , THIS is a job better left to professionals . . . most people end up with hair that looks like straw. Perhaps , after the bleaching, some blond color is added back in , but the bleaching really trashes hair so have a hairdresser do it.

For really dark hair, you might need to bleach (hair version) two times at least. Then you'd have to use special cream to remove that orange (aka red highlights that most brunettes have) brassy color. Then you'd have to tone it to the specific blonde you want!! It's a long process that can torture your hair, so I suggest getting it done professionally! If you don't have the money, go to Sally beauty or closest hair supply store and ask them for help on choosing which products!

You should go to a professional hairdresser. I have my darker brown hair highlighted with lots of small highlights. It's never orange and has a lot of depth and doesn't look unnatural (but I have dark hair and light, not olive skin. Your hairdresser can determine what shades will look best on you).

Definitely go to a hair dresser - and highlighting is the best way to transition into it - let's you start with a little bit - make sure you like the shade, etc, then you can increase amount of hair highlighted as you go along. Good luck!
