i considered yorkie, but now i am thinking that it might not be such a good idea. i want a toy dog but i don't want the dog to be yappy or overprotective of one person. it should get along with people very easily and have a low temperment. I'm visiting a yorkie and their breeder today to see, so please help before it is too late. oh yea- i got the ad from a pennysaver and the woman sounded very nice. is this a safe way of buying a puppy? my friend got a dog from pennysaver and it is very healthy and nice.

A Pomeranian is the same size as a Yorkie. The are a great family pet, and very loyal! The only problem with them is they do tend to yap if you don't get it under control as a young pup. The best way I have found to fix the situation is a squirt bottle. As your pet is yapping you squirt them with the bottle and in a firm tone say NO! After a few sessions like that (AS A YOUNG PUP!) you should get it under control with minimal problems later. Yorkies are good dogs, however they are not recommended for a family pet as they can be tempermental and very much a 1 owner pet. BUYING A PUP FORM A PAPER CAN BE A 50/50 CHANCE TO TAKE. SOME PEOPLE ARE HONEST WHILE OTHERS ARE ONLY OUT FOR THE BUCK. GOOD LUCK!

NOOOO!! I don't know what penny saver is, but unless she's a breeder who is regsitered with the canine council or AKC, don't go near them. Pups should be bred for genetic soundness and most backyard breeders don't do this!! Poorly bred yorkies are full of problems. They have nasty luxating patellas which require surgery, hip problems which require surgery, collapsed tracheas which can't be operated on, heart defects which can require surgery or sometimes lead to untimely demise of puppy, liver shunt which you can't fix... all sorts.. it's awful!!

Yorkies are always amongst the top 5 most popular breeds in the u.s. which is why there's so much poor standard breeding out there. Isn't it awful?

There aren't going to be other dogs as small as a yorkie should be. The yorkshire terrier is the second smallest breed in the world (chihuahuas are the only smaller breed). You will have to go bigger.

Oh yeah yorkies don't do well with children. They nip and they yap but mostly because they do nip. Children can handle them a little too roughly and then they become afraid. Kids are kids, you can't truly blame them. Lots of kids have clumsy hands. I certainly did when I was young! Small breed dogs do have a tendency towards nipping and yipping.

I always recommend cavalier king charles spaniels because of their trainability, and because of their beautiful natures. They're very good family dogs particularly with young children. Beagles are also good but they get distracted whilst training and can be a training challenge, particularly if the pup is your first pup. Pugs are good with children but they are prone to health problems.

If you wanted to go larger i'd buy a labrador or a golden retriever but this doesn't sound like it's for you.

Cavalier king charles spaniels are still a small breed though.

don't get a Yorkie they are very yap and overprotective of one person. Poodles are great for kids and families and they don't shed. Don't pic a breeder that as a lot of different dogs for sale. Most are puppy mills. Ask to see the parents. If your not wanting a pure breed then go to you local Humane Society first please or a breeder with only one or two breeds of dogs. And get a receipt for the money. Even have the breeder put 2 days vet check or money back. I do to all my customers. Cathy

Get a shih tzu! I have one and he is so easy going and friendly to every one. You just have to look at him and his tail starts wagging. No matter which breed you choose, please buy your puppy from a reputable breeder (one that is registered with the AKC and only breeds one breed of dog). If you aren't all that interested in a pure bred dog, then try your local shelter or humane society. However, you cannot predict the full grown size or temperament of a dog that is not purebred. So, if you go to the shelter, you may need to only look at adult dogs.

I have 2 Maltese. They are extremely friendly and are ok with strangers. They love to play with kids. Mine are a bit bigger than Yorkies I believe. They are 7 & 8 lbs.

My mom just got a maltese and named her Sophie. She's one of the best dogs- only weighs 4 lbs, not yappy, very very friendly and has a great personality! She's very entertaining, too! Good luck!

You're right. Yorkies are noisy, and can be a bit nervous.

Maltese and Shih Tzus are calmer toy breeds. Or you could go with a dachshund. I'm a little biased toward weenie dogs, though, I had one when I was younger. :)

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?CFGS

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
