I want to use blank cartridges, or a homemade blanks to shoot arrows out of my weapons and use them to hunt during archery season. I think it's legal, there's no law that says I HAVE to use a bow; ie: I think I can stab an animal with an arrow during archery season by sneaking up on it and just stabbing it, so why can't I use a rifle to shoot an arrow at an animal? While I'm thinking about it, can I shoot odd objects out of my weapons, pencils? dowels? small super balls? How about making a reel that I can attach to my rifle to "cast" a lure FAR out into a lake?

I have actually done this with a 20 GA. single shot with the "shot" removed from a shell. While it is possible, i would not recommend it. It shoots with to much force. you are wanting to cast a lure out, chances are it would snap your line its moving so fast. i shot an aluminum arrow into a storm cellar(dirt on outside and stell about a foor or so in) and it shattered the arrow it had so much forse!!! so, might wanna think twice about trying it. And the reason i know, (shouldnt admit this) but we thought about using it for hunting purposes.

It is illegal to carry a firearm afield during an archery season. It doesn't matter if you told your gaming officials that you were going to shoot an arrow out of your gun. When they were done laughing they would probably take your gun, hunting, license, and then laugh again. I am geussing that your yearly hunting manual has definitions in the front about what legal weapons can be used to hunt. They call it bow hunting for a reason. Know why? Cuz you use a bow.

The reason why you can not is because you are using a triger device to shot the projectile, at least that is the reason why hunters in Michigan can not use a crossbow during the archery season.
You NEVER put anything down the muzzle of a gun that it is not intended for, unless you want to blow something up in your face and possibly kill your self or others standing around you wile your doing this. you should NEVER mess around with a gun and it sounds like to me you are a 12-15 year old kid with no common sence.

OK now to the fishing idea like I stated above (You NEVER put anything down the muzzle of a gun that it is not intended for).
And if you did, it would not work because of the burning of the gun power would melt the fishing line and the lure does not have enough weight to it to travel more than 50 feet so don't be lazy and get to proper fishing equipment.
with the proprer fishing equipment you can cast 70-80 yards depending on the proper equipment and if you are casting into the wind or with the wind.

It may not say you have to use a bow, but it will say that it cannot be propelled by chemicals, springs, compressed gas, etc.
Read it.

The shotgun idea would be far safer for other projectiles.
It'd fashion some kind of sabot for it however.

Perhaps if you partially drilled the center out of a slug, and inserted the projectile into that - it might work. That would seem safer than to try to fit the projectile to the barrel.
I'd use a 12-gauge (someone else's - of course - I'm not stupid) to make sure it had plenty of room to clear the barrel.

Next best bet, a blackpowder rifle. You can really reduce the powder load that way (start about 5-10 grains or the smallest amount that will fill the chamber level from side to side.)

I'd also use a very, very long string to fire it from behind a storm-cellar.

Really, for what your thinking, it doesn't matter at all. Let's assume for just a second that it would actually work and that it would be accurate enough to actually hit an animal. Ok, that aside, you still wouldn't be able to use your shotgun, even using arrows, to hunt druing bow season. It is not what comes our of your gun, arrow, ect. that matters, it is what force is used to shoot it. No matter what comes out of the barrlel, you will still be using a 'firearm'. You can't hunt during 'bow' season with a firearm, no matter what. As for the lure casting thing, buy a belly boat or something. It's cheaper than a shotgun, and you won't kill yourself using it either.

Obviously y'all haven't heard of Airrow. It is a barrell made for the ruger 10/22 and 77/22 that accepts arrows as a projectile using blanks as a propellant. But it is considered a firearm by every state that I know of because it is propelled by gas. Also where I live it wouldn't even be legal to use during rifle season since it uses rimfire.

ah, you kids and your crazy schemes. ok, you can shoot arrows out of a shotgun if you take a shell and empty the shot out of it. you won't have enough accuracy to hit an animal due to the arrow not flying straight. you want that type of weapon buy a crossbow if your state allows that. shotgun fired things such as arrows or dowel rods are mostly used for the launching action of something you need to put way out there such as a rope for climbing or a tie off line, or maybe even some sort of fireworks. (notice i didn't say anything about an explosive) also i do think shooting a arrow from a gun would be considered as having a modified weapon and therefore would be illegal. just call your local fish and game comission and ask them.

The arrow would never survive the G's forced at the rear of it....That's why they invented bullets and buck shot.

They do however make small arrows less than an inch long too use in place of buck shot. Made by a specialty company..not sure of the name.

Yes you can do this and live to tell about it. First do not use anything but a 4-10 shot gun take the shot gun shell open it up and take shot out, load into gun , then take arrow remove fletching, then take arrow and load gun. Know if you are man enough to pull the trigger then pull it if you are chicken lock it down in a gun vice , what you will find out is it will be very fast, but no accuracy.

Just have to follow up on Hey There's erroneous comment that it is illegal to carry a firearm while bow hunting. Check your rules again. In Indiana, if you have a carry permit, they can not prevent you from carrying anywhere you can legally carry, including on DNR property and anywhere you have permission to bow hunt.

If you don't know your butt from a hole in the ground, just STFU
