a hand is four inches. 12/4 = 3 3x5=15, so any time you want to convert the height from feet to hands just multiply the number of feet by 3.
example: a horse is 3 feet tall. multiply by 3 and the horse is 9 hands tall.
but you have to be careful on the decimals. say a horse is 3.5 feet tall, you multiply by 3 and you get 10.5 the point 5 represents half but it has to be converted into hands, so 1/2 a hand is 2in and it is 10.2 hands tall. i don't think that part mathematicly makes since but i didn't make it up. the decimal represents the number of inches after a hand and not the actual fraction, you will never hear of a horse being 10.5 hands tall, or even 10.4 hands tall because that is 11 hands. does that make since now?
for the length: its from the poll (between their ears) to i think either the point of the hip or the begining of the dock of the tail
the reason it is from the poll and not the nose is because how do you know when to measure from the nose, when they stick it in the air or when they have it tucked in?

Hand = are 4 inch at the weathers.
15.2 hands is 60 inch just over 5 feet
One hand is the four fingers(15) and the 2 is the finger width of two fingers.

Length of a horse is from nose to tail, about 8 feet for horse in racing. That is about 1/5 of a second or on tick.

Now if you were guessing the weight then you measure the point of chest to point of croup, not quite the same.

Multiply 5 feet X 12 inches = 60 inches. Divide 60 inches by 4 inches (1 hand = 4 inches) and you get 15. The horse is 15 hands high, measured at the highest point of his withers (shoulder).

Most people aren't concerned with a horse's length, which is what I assume you mean, because it's going to be proportional to his height. If you did want to measure his length, you would measure from the point of shoulder to the point of buttock, but I wouldn't worry about that unless you're trying to buy a blanket or cooler or flysheet.

I think the height has been covered.

As for measuring, if you are talking about measuring for blanket fitting you measure from the center of the chest back to the tail. Make sure your tape measure stays horizontal to the ground, or this will alter the measurement. If the horse measures a 74" for example, it is best to buy a 76" blanket.
