does anyone know anything about the quality of akai tvs?

Akai is manufactured by Samsung. However, don't expect Samsung quality.

We have had no complaints on the Rear projection LCD sets we've sold at our store, but the LCD flatpanels keep coming back a few weeks later.

I think they're decent, but I would go with a Vizio if you're looking for something a little off brand to save money.

they are good, why pay more for a name.
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
