I have decided to take up duck hunting in the last couple years, but my duck calling is lacking to say the least. I have been able to get ducks to come in to my decoys without calling, but how can i increase this. Will adding movement to the decoys help?? I have considered using Quiver Magnets to add ripples to the decoy spread, but never actually tried it yet. Just any suggestion. I am hunting alone, with about 2 dozen decoys if that helps. Usually in tall reeds, or flooded timber here in northern Arkansas.

yes you can get ducks without calling. a call does help though. any movement in the decoys does help. i don't know what the local laws are in your area are but cabelas sells a robo-duck which gives the appearance of a duck landing in the decoys. there is both a battery powered one and a wind powered one. they work wonders. i have both. i recomend you try one you won't be disapointed.

as for the calling thing. try in the off season, going to a local park and call the ducks. see if you can get them to answer you. thats how i learned when i was a kid.

I think that practicing makes perfect. I have been hunting ducks for close to 10 years now and am just now confident in my calling abilities. If you are hunting in flooded timber, then you need something to catch the attention of the ducks besides your deeks. Otherwise they are liable to fly right over you. My suggestion is to get a good CD and just keep practicing by immitating the recording. A duck call is like any other musical instrument. You can't play a symphony the first time out, but if you keep working on it, you will eventually make it. Don't get discouraged and keep working on it!

In your neck of the woods, it is better not to call or very little if any. By the time ducks get down south, they have heard every type of call there is. A good flooded open area in the woods with 2 doz deks is a good spread. Call only to get their attention then shut up and let them work. A string from you to a line of five or six duck is all you need for movement. Good Hunting and Bust a Duck!!!

Any of those things will help, but keep working on your calls. You needn't be competitive down in Stuttgart to make the calls worthwhile. And next year, start practicing your calls in August.

Just go scare them off of ponds. They are pretty easy to shoot when you do that.
