Join the queue at the local recycling centre (see my question about town councils being green) who have facilities for dealing with them.
Alternatively, if the computer is in working order, there are charities around you could donate it to who will either find someone less fortunate who could make good use of it or strip it down for its useable parts and safely (in a green sense) dispose of the rest.

if you dispose of the computer make sure you remove or wipe your hard drive. It has been reported that some people are buying the old systems and checking the hard drive for bank information and other usable info.
offer than disposal at the local recyling centre, try Ebay people by anything from that site or the local adtrader.

I second the recommendation of Freecycle. I've been a member of my local group for a while now, and it's a great way to dispose of stuff whilst keeping it out of landfill.

Search for places that take WEEE (Waste electrical and electronic equipment), local reycling centres or scrap yards do, but make sure they're licenced. Good luck with the disposal.

Put it in a cardboard box, wrap it with gift paper, decorate it with Christmas stickers, left it inside your car, go away five minutes, after that you will have a successful discard.

In my city, (Austin, Texas) Goodwill accepts old computers. They either fix them up and resell them or dispose of them in an environmentally safe way.

call your garbage company and find out about any tech drop off points. They have several in our area and make a pickup once a year at our house. I'm sure that your area prob has one.

Go to http://www.freecycle.org and find your local freecycle group. There you can offer stuff to people for free for them to collect if they have any use for it - maybe someone can reuse it or at least use the parts.

Sell it to someone for £20. so it continues to get use.
OR
Give it to a charity or local school or project, so that they can take it apart and learn how it works, or give it to a student to use for studies.

Wherever you take your recyclables will usually take old computers and monitors. They take them apart and recycle everything.
