my hamster died last week and my kitty loved him! i really dont want another one but i know that cat misses him, he sits by where the cage used to be and cries. Im thinking of getting a fish tank w/ fish to replace the hamster...think the cat would be interested?

I have 3 cats, only one of them has any interest in fish. She likes to sit and watch them swim. I have had a cat in the past who really liked fish, he used to knock the lid off the tank and go fishing! So, if you do get fish, make sure you have a secure lid on the tank. There are also videos out that you can play for your cat that have birds and squirrels on them. 2 of my cats love them, the third (the one that likes the fish) totally ignores them. Cats have their own personallities so you won't know until you try.

I think tarlalo is right.
Kitty might find a fish interesting; cats usually find anything that moves interesting. But kitty is grieving; he misses his beloved friend. He needs a new friend to comfort him in his grief. A fish in a tank wouldn't offer any comfort or companionship.
Maybe the best solution would be a new cat, a younger one that would look up to your kitty and want to be his pal. An adolescent male about a year or a year and a half old might be perfect. Young males will often look up to an older male and seek their companionship.
If you contact a rescue group that keeps cats in foster homes they'll know their kitties' personalities and they can help you find a young male who isn't aggressive and is sociable towards other cats. And they will let you take the kitty on trial, so if your present cat doesn't accept the newcomer you'll be able to return him to the foster home.
Meanwhile, remember that your kitty is grieving and try to comfort him with lots of extra love and affection.

I would wait a couple days, which it probably already has been, and if kitty is still missing the hamster, I would replace it with another. Fish can be entertaining to a cat, but they do loose interest in them and get bored. Fish start to become a fixture to a cat. They are fun for awhile, but that is it. The hamster provided a source of companionship for your kitty.

From experiance, cats will try to get at the fish. I had six bad kittens at one time with two frogs, and a catfish.
Also, one of my other cats sibling died in a swimming pool before I got them. And for the hamster, go ahead and get it, just make sure the cat can't reach through the cage, it might hurt him at first!
Hope this helps!! :-)

If you do decide to go with fish be very sure that you get a hood on your tank that is cat proof. Cats hate water but they like fish more and your kitty will either catch your fish or stress them out. Either way, a hoodless tank is a bad idea.

not as much as the hamster. your cat could smell the hamster and be close to it. fish are behind glass and not as interesting to cats. that is just my personal experience.

whats up ducky, finding on what style of fish your cat likes (and not all cats like quite the various fish obtainable, mine does not pass nuts on the sight/smell of salmon yet she is going INSANE if she smells Tuna or Cod fillets), it quite is quite useful to grant fish arms a pass. Ask the vet first nonetheless lol. I peel off the breaded crumbs and cube up the cod fillet of the fish finger and softly douse it with chilly water (to function moisture) , one or 2 is sufficient and notice if your cat will consume that. please ask your vet if it relatively is okay nonetheless, if it doesnt hel p the cats poop element oh nicely.
