There are several free sources to get help for college. However, each item takes time, and it is free to access along with submitting your application. All of it takes time to hear whether or not you were selected though to receive funds.
First, apply after January 1 for the fall semester for FAFSA. It will help you tap into need based financial aid for college from the state and federal governments along with the college itself. However, it is based both on the family income and resources.
Second, a current high school student can go to the high school guidance office and find a list of local scholarships.
Third, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes, an individual college major will have a list of scholarships available, too.
Fourth, the public library has a scholarship listing book. It often contains scholarships not listed on the web.
Finally, join several free membership scholarship search websites. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on the information that an individual enters into a form on their website.
Good luck!

Search for scholarships. You'd be surprised. There are millions of dollars of unclaimed scholarship money each year. Try 1-800-USA-LEARN or 1-800-4-FEDAID if you have questions.

There's no such thing as free money.
However, with a little work through http://www.fastweb.com, you should get a few scholarships.
