a friend left a list of things for her child to do each day...
but it wasn't chores.
it was things like:
1. look in the mirror
2. pet the cat
3. walk outside in the back yard
4. get a drink of water
5. listen to your favorite CD
6. practice air guitar
etc.
of course giving them chores and responsibilities is good.
especially if you can make it so they can't do something they want until they get the chore done. have them call you periodically to report their progress on the "list"

many local museums & attractions offer events for kids during their holidays. or do like me & send them to someone else's house :)
