Ever since puppyhood my dog has been flaky about coming inside when I call her. I've tried treats, etc., to make her come inside (i give them to her when she comes in, not while she's outside). I've tried being stern and being not so stern.. But she just doesn't come inside everytime I call her. She listens to my dad though, because he uses a very stern voice. But I'm not a guy so lol, even with that voice she doesn't listen to me or my mom. Anyway, apparently I must be doing something wrong or not enough or somethinG because she has yet to learn "come inside." Much to my dismay lol. Please help if any of you have had experience with this. Thanks so much :o)

See, that's the thing that confuses me.. My dog knows I'm the boss in every other situation lol. I know that sounds kind of weird, but it's true. She listens to me with everything else, literally everything. So.. ya. Lol. Dont' know what else to say. I don't get mad at her when she comes inside, in fact I'm always nice to her like you said. She just loves loves loves being outside so much that she doesn't give a hoot about treats or hugs or playing. Lol. She's an inside dog, just a small Bichon Poo not even 2 years old so.. I don't know. I'm not gonna give up on it though. Thanks for your answers so far. :o)

In teaching the command "Come", regardless of where, you HAVE to teach it with a leash - every single time. I agree that there seem to be some Alpha male issues, but I would suggest that you try some simple on the leash training with the word "Come". Start with getting your dog to come from across the room, then across the yard, then into the house. It shouldn't matter where you are, when you say "Come" your dog should "Come". I've also noticed that the biggest difference with my dog is being on his level when you call him. If I stand up straight and call him then he tries to play, but if I crouch over a little and call him in a sweet voice then he'll move toward me. We're still working on the training, but it's a matter of being able to force your dog to do the action you are commanding, so as long as you have her on the leash she will HAVE to come - and it will probably take a few months, but eventually she'll think that if you say "COME" then she HAS to do it. It may be helpful to enroll in obedience training - it will help keep you focused on training too.

My puppy was the same with me (not the inside matter) but the Alpha, pack member dominance issue. It is not so much a matter of your puppy not coming inside as it is not listening to you and thinking she is higher than you are! This will cause HUGE problems later if you don't fix this now...I have a very soft high pitched voice and my puppy was very stubborn to listen to me for about a week. I tried lowering my voice making it deeper, but to no avail! The best thing that worked for me was to have me feed my puppy with no one else doing it for awhile, also flipping him on his back to show that I was boss. This did not affect my husband's dominance over him at all, but did establish mine! Try this for awhile...or read up on how to become the alpha in a dog/human relationship. Once she realizes that you are boss too, she will be more adept to listening to your commands (ie come inside).

If you punish her when she finally comes in for not coming in right away she doesn't understand that it is for not listening. She thinks it is for coming inside! Give her lots of praise when she comes in no matter how many times you have to call her and she will start coming to you more willingly.

Apparently the dog has decided that you and your mother are lower ranking pack members. Dad's the alpha.

I'll bet your dad is the one who has done most of the training?
