My dog is two in a half, he is mostly a Chow Chow, Border Collie mix. I know that these breeds aren't exactly in love with water, but, my dog is terrified. He is so scared of water, that if you give him a dry rag, then he will play with it, but if you put any water on it, then lay it on the ground, he will sniff it, jump back, and start running! I'm not even gonna get started on how he acts when it's bath time! i want to know if there is a way to get him used to water, he needs a bath, and He won't stop running!

Oh my gosh! I have one corgi that is deathly afraid of water...he cries at the sight of it. He shakes in the groomers tub.
I don't know what you can do...but I understand.
Good luck!

I had a Chow Border Collie mix (just lost him this year). I would love to see a picture of yours! Could you post a pic?
Mine used to hate water with a passion too. When it came to bath time I put a leash on him, tightened his collar a bit (when his coat got wet the collar would easily slip off becasue his fur was so thick). Then I would take him outside to the yard where I already had put everything I needed. Then I would step on the leash (wrap the loop arund my shoe) and bathe him, giving him treats every few minutes.. He soaked me everytime, top to bottom. His thick coat could hold a LOT of water making getting him wet all the way through, soaping and rinsing took a very long time. He hated it, but it was necessary. I always had a backache by the time I was done too.
And if yours is anything like mine was, combing won't be any easier!

Maybe you could try just taking him into the bathroom (or wherever you will bathe him) without any water in the tub several times and let him adjust to sitting there without any fear of the water. Then put a little bit of water in the tub and just let him sit beside it, then maybe put one paw in it. I am sure that he will react horribly at first, but with your patience and discipline he should learn that there's no need to fear water. If you simply cannot find a way for you to bathe him personally then I suggest you find a professional groomer who is willing to bathe him.

from personal experience, its something that doesnt change. my dog used to LOVE water, went swimming in lakes, would get out of the yard to go play in the creek, but then the boarders would force her to have a bath, and ever since then (even when we stopped going to them and told the new ones to never bathe her) that stayed with her more than 7 years. we could never get her over it again. my spaniel hates water too. thankfully she is small enough that we can make her bathe (even tho we dont, we just send her to the groomers)
our new pup is a little afraid too. she fell in the pool one day, even tho we were right there and immediatly "saved" her. we're hoping that next summer she will want to play with us when we go swimming and that will change her opinion of it, but for now, she's hates baths and she hates us for putting her in there. so *fingers crossed*
i think it will just take LOTS of work, slowly esculating the amount of water exposed to. but from the sounds of it, your dog might need the dog whisperer for this one

I think it is pretty normal. My dog is also terrified of water. If you adopted him, your pup may have been abused before, maybe even close to drowned. I don't know, if he's afraid of water on a rag, something might be wrong. I would reccomend checking a vet, because a lot of dogs are scared of water, but usually not to those extremes.

Well my dog has the same problem, he is a basenji and they hate water. He is about three and still scared. He usually runs away from it or jumps over it. Basically you have to get him used to water. But it is a fear he will get over sometime, just as a person does.

were you the only owner of the dog? you must tie the dog to something outside with the leash, wash the dog while making it feel comfortable by petting it on the head, telling him/her it will be o.k. till it gets used to it...my dog had the same problem now hes fine after doing this..

I have a pittbull that is afraid of getting a bath. He litterally shakes in fear when he knows he's getting one and has even peed a little.
