In the state I live, New Hampshire, we don't have to have insurance. But if you are in an accident you could be sued. In NH if you are in an accident you may be required to get insurance. But the police never ask to see proof of insurance here in NH unless you are in an accident.
Apparently in other states, you could not only be sued, but you could also have some hefty fines to pay by the state you are in.
You would have to find out with in your own state what the laws are about being pulled over and not having insurance.

What is worse is if you get in an accident without insurance the other party can sue you, take your house, garnish your wages and make you wish you'd have just taken the bus.
You shouldn't drive without insurance at all. Get a ride from a friend, take the bus or a cab. You can start a policy with Progressive.com immediately and very easily by only making the first payment. You don't have to pay 6 months up front.

You shouldn't be worried about getting pulled over, you should be worried about getting in an accident. If you hit another car and do damage, guessing that you can't afford insurance now, totaling a 50k bmw suv probably isn't something you have pocket change for either. It isn't safe to drive without insurance, if you do hit someone, you may end up loosing your license and then won't be able to drive at all.

Here you will be cited for driving uninsured, which has a base fine of $244. If you are convicted, you will have to pay the fine and your driver's license will be suspended.
If you are unable to provide current proof of insurance when you're stopped, we have your car towed off and held until you can provide proof of insurance. In the meantime, you are responsible for paying the towing and storage fees, even if you did have insurance, because you could not provide proof when you got stopped.

Depends on what state you live in. If you live in the communist People's Republic of Californiastan for example, you can be fined if you drive without insurance.
Other states do not require you to have insurance. Check your local laws.
