I was active duty for 4 years (RM3) Radioman. The ex-hubby was a BM2 (Boatswain Mate).
I loved the experience. It was the only time in my life that I was a valued member of a team but still sought out for my uniqueness. Bootcamp was tough but the USCG has the shortest bootcamp at only 8 weeks. It has been a wonderful experience. I was taught Search and Rescue Communications, skills that I use in the civilian world too. Both my sons have joined......

Just to clarify....you CAN get shipped overseas and you CAN see action. My ex was in the Gulf war.

i actually wanted to join the coast guard but i ended up joining the army. boot camp was awesome for the most part. if you are in good shape you should easily pass. coast guard is a great military job because you won't be departed over seas. on the negative side coast guard isn't the best if you are looking for some action.

ps. boot camp is actually supposed to be fun.

I'm currently in the Navy, and the general consensus of what I've heard is that the Coast Guard is just a watered down version of the Navy. Might be cool to do after I get out of the Navy, if I feel like a change of pace.

I was Radioman USCG for ten years.

Has good boot camp info and Coast Guard forums.

Coast Guard hasn't got the prettiest facilities.
The Coast Guard Base here in Seattle looks like a group of old warehouses.
Smaller units and probably a bit looser than other branches.

I would post on military.com coast guard forums.
Get it more from the horses mouth.

I liked it.
