I would suggest starting with blonde highlights. Then gradually working more and more in. It is a good way to see if you are going to like the change without being too dramatic, plus it looks more natural!

You didn't say what complexion or eyecolor you have. That would help in telling you what shade to color your hair. The one thing I can definitely say is don't go too light (i.e. platinum) blonde. It almost always looks fake and doesn't flatter the majority of people. If you wanted something that looked very natural, then you could have medium and dark blonde highlights put through your hair to give it the natural dirty blonde look. That would probably be pretty, and less damaging to your hair.

maybe try putting in some blonde hilights first - that looks pretty sweet on women - brown hair with blond hilights. if you just want to go for the blond, you'll need to go by your skin tone. if you have a more reddish skin tone, you should go with the more ashy blondes, but if you're more olive, you can do a more golden blonde.

Take into consideration your skin tone...eye brows...etc. If you're doing it yourself, then ask someone with a skin tone close to your own. If you're doing it at a salon, then your stylist should be able to give you a couple of choices. You might get a better look with hi-lights then going completely blond.
