I have been to Iraq twice, and I have seen a lot of things that we have done for them. But I think that we need to get their forces trained as quickly as possible, and allow them to start making the choices that they feel are in their best interests. As for the infighting, it has been going on the 100's of years and the only reason we know about it now, and is plastered all over the media, is because we are there. It was going on long before we got there, and it will possibly continue after we are gone, that is an issue that they will have to deal with. But for the most part, they are better off with us having gone in, because aside from what you see on the news, we have helped a great deal, opened schools, helped supply running water and electricity to areas that didn't have it, and even though you see alot of deaths, both Military and civilian, it does pale in comparison to what was happening before we got there. As for the hype that we are losing soo many American lives over there, compare it to some of the death rates of some American cities, and it will make you sick to know that places like D.C. and LA have higher death rates. Also, look at how many were lost in previous wars, in the 10's of thousands. Getting back to the question I think that Democracy will be good for that region, the only problem with that is that it is a heavily religious society, and those ideals sometimes conflict with democratic processes. Another fact is that the differences in the sects of their religion will cause some problems. That will all boil down to the attitudes and willingness of the people in power to look beyond their differences to attain their goals. BTW I made no mention of pulling out of Iraq, for the simple fact, that it would cause more harm than Suddam could ever have done to them. WMD's well, just because we can't find them now, does not neccesarily mean they weren't there. There have been small cache's of biologicals that have been found. Did the media broadcast that, NO of course not. As for the liberals that think we went in illegally, just remember congress had to approve it, and how many of the Democrat voted, you need a 2/3's vote, and republicans only had a little over half the total senators, if you remember this past election they only needed what, 6 seats to take majority.

What would've been best for Iraq would've been a their own rebellion against Saddam, FOLLOWED BY support from the US, and I suppose other countries, if they asked for it.
oh wait, that happened, and we didn't supply support, and most of the rebels, including some leaders that would've been good for the country, were killed. (this was during Clinton's admin)
I'm rather ambivalent on the issue. On one hand, I don't think we should be there. On the other hand, if we just pull out without providing enough infrastructure (yay engineering divisions!) and while the government is still unstable, it's quite possible that they'll descend into civil war and come out with a leader as ruthless as Saddam was, maybe worse.

For people on here to let the military make that decision due to the fact that we are in it now and must make the right choice in exiting. Most on this site have no idea what its like over there, only what the media tells. We can't simply leave the country, that would be worse. We have brilliant minds in the upper ranks of the military. They will choose the best course of action based on the facts and the experience they have. Time will tell if it was right or wrong, at that point we can ***** and moan it was wrong or right. For now, support the troops and the country, that is the best thing we can do as citizens of this country.

The longer we are in Iraq, the more dangerous it becomes for Americans.
We've toppled Hussein, destroyed his government, and convicted him as a mass murderer. Yet no WMD were found. More soldiers have died in Bush's illegal campaign that Saddam Hussein ever gassed. The current insurgent violence is a result of spite and a civil dispute that has been going on longer than anyone can remember. The US is only adding more gas to the fire. We need a scheduled pull out plan, and we need to stick to it.
Fug Al-Queda! They weren't there before and the only reason they are there now is because US is there. Get our troops out and they'll have no reason to be there. Bring 'em home so they can really protect the Citizens of the USA.

To stay with them for the long haul -- and it IS going to be a long haul, but a necessary one. Regardless of whether you feel the U.S. should have gone in there in the first place, to pull out right now would be a disaster of epic proportions. The fledgling Iraqi government agrees, as does a majority of the Iraqi population (despite the insurgents and the sectarian violence from a relative minority). We need to stick with them during this difficult phase.

For the world to support their growing democracy and respect their decisions. To have the courage and dignity to be at their side during this phase.

To send in enough troops to finish the job by eradicating all the terrorists and al-queda.
One other way would be to remove all of our troops and nuke them from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. ;-)
