About 5% of the electrical consumption of the USA is spent in creating pure aluminum. Any effort to recycle aluminum cans significantly reduces that effort.

Although less impact, recycling plastics allows us to reduce our dependence on imported oil.

The difficulties are several. Educating the public so that they are aware that they can help, and politically requiring the local waste management to develop and maintain a recycling program. Once that is done, it is just a matter of getting in the habit of recycling.
