Why do guys lie to show he's not too keen when he is?

like when he pretended not to know stuff about you but as you chat, he says stuff that contradicts his earlier statements(saying he doesnt know this and that)

he wants to play it cool but he is not doing it very well if he gives himself away

i really dont know when i am with a lady i want her to know that i respect her enough to hear what she is saying

it's a sign of insecurity. He probably thinks it's a sign of weekness.
