Can you literally not see the screen if you move a few steps to the left or right?

I just got the Samsung 42 inch DLP. The manual says the left right angles are about 60 to 70 degrees, the top/bottom angle is about 30 degrees.

My TV is about 5 feet from any chair in the room and the angle is good all around.

I highly recommend the TVs thought. No rainbow effect and the best picture I have seen on a DLP!

the view is great i think. I have a 50" Sony dlp. Its got such a better picture than the rear projection we had. The projections have multiple screens, so when you move to the side, you get the screen glare a couple times. The DLP has almost an LCD look, its nice and bright at night even. Move to the side, still a great picture.

I have 46" DLP and the side to side viewing is great, no shadow effect. The only downfall I noticed is that you need to be at eye level for the best picture.
