Yes, we do live in a stereotypical society, so I would say women. Since according to stereotypes conducted by university professors, women tend to be stronger in language and men in math, it would seem logical women would be better writers. Yet, if we were to look at Nobel prize winners in America for literature, we would notice that the only women on that list is Princeton University professor Toni Morrison. Also in the Princeton English department is another excellent woman writer Joyce Carol Oates. Yet let's go back to the Nobel prize. The men list include Ernest Hemmingway, John Steinbeck, Saul Bellows, Eugene O'Neill, all Nobel Prize winners in literature as writers. So to answer your question, I still say women are better writers because that's the stereotype most popular right now, today. That's what counts.

I don't believe that being a better writer has anything to do with the gender of a person. Your ability to write well depends on your education and talent, in my opinion.

in my experience, women flood higher-level english classes both in highschool and college. however, at the top-end of the top-end, it's a draw. so the top fifty percent is dominated by women but the top ten percent is pretty even. women are both pushed to be more expressive beyond "you guys wanna play quarters at becky's tonight?" and have the socialized position of "the other" or rather, the outsider, thus pushing them to other means of power-seeking that often include a more analytical perspective where they express themselves through written observations (i.e. diaries). hope this helps.
