Hi all,

On Monday (2 days ago) I went to the dentist complaining of severe toothache. She didn't even x-ray me and prescribed me Amoxicillin (250g). I persume she thought it was an infection or absess.

Anyway, now I'm taking Ibuprofen and it bloody hurts every now and then especially after I have food or drink. Feels like I have teeth made of ice. Whats even worse is that its bloody cold outside! Talk about bad timing.

Is this the normal antibiotic effect and will I have to wait another 3 or 4 days before this blows over?

More importantly, will I be good in time for Christmas Dinner (5 days from now)?!

Thanks muchly,
Tom

If you want to be out of pain for christmas then you need to see your dentist and get the tooth either extracted or have root canal therapy (if this dentist doesn't have time for it find somebody who does). For an adult the usual dose for amoxicillin is 500mg every 6 hours. It does normally take a couple days to feel better if indeed there was an abscess. Notice I said feel better...not feel nothing. The source of the pain is coming from inside that tooth and antibiotics won't touch this...an abscess is normally around the base of the tooth on the outside...the antibioticc will help this. Therefor there will still be some pain (of which the degree will vary) but it should be better than before you started the antibiotic. Pain medications will work but unless it isn't a narcotic, plan on sleeping for christmas.

I was prescribed the same thing after I had an infection behind my wisdom tooth. I also got a prescription for painkillers (Lortab) and was told to make an appointment for extraction after a week. I never did take the painkillers but the actual infection (and the pain) cleared up within 2 days. Maybe you have something else?

You will be fine, the antibiotics will keep infection at bay. I have had 4 teeth out and it doesnt hurt. You will be abit numb after the extraction but it will not be painful. Afterwards there may be a bit of bleeding so bite a knotted hankie to stem the bleeding. I think the worst bit is the injection into the gum but its over and done will in seconds then you wont feel a thing. good luck and dont worry.

If the dentist suspects infection, she will prescribe antibiotics, but usually there is a follow up appt within a week. I would call the dental office and at least ask for something for pain, and maybe you need something stronger, than 250mg dosing.

usually you don't see the effects of antibiotics for a few days.. they dont' work instantly like pain killers... this is why you have to take them regularly.. and for the full dose.. you're only on your second day... give it some time... meanwhile take tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain
