I had that same problem when I bought my tower - it has the capability to play dvds but I had to buy a program which contained the proper codecs and drivers to allow me to play dvds. Unless you download these illegally I'm pretty sure you have to pay for this but they're not expensive - mines was approx £15. Have a look on the windows website - it'll point you in the right direction.

You may have downloaded the suggested driver, but have you installed it? Were you able to play DVDs before or is it a new PC which is not playing DVDs at all? If it's the latter, then you have every right to insist that the supplier sorts it out. If it's the former then something has been changed in your media player settings. Not easy to solve for you without knowing all the details and I know how difficult that is in these forums

Well it can be one of two reasons. One: Your WMP is really old and needs to be updated which is easily solved by going to Microsoft and downloading the newest version on it. And Two: you don't have the necessary codecs/decoders needed to play the DVD. These are things the computer uses to play types of software. If you don't have them then you computer can't read the data and will give you an error message. But there are a lot of these kinds that a computer uses so you have to figure out the one you are missing and then either download it from a website or buy it.

Assuming the DVD plays okay on other machines, then assuming other DVD's do not work in your computer, is that your DVD player in the computer has become "locked" to a particularly "region". I suggest you need to search the web using your DVD-player manufacturer and part number to work out how to re-set it. Normally when shipped the DVD-manufacturer does not know where the DVD player is going to end up, so the drive is "region-free". You can normally play 2 or 3 different region disks on using the drive, but if you play DVD's from other regions the drive can become locked to the "foreign" region and then you find you can't play DVD's from your local rental store!!!

I had the same problem. Does a little box appear when you try and play them? If so click Web help and it should say something about a codec. If it has the name of the codec then copy it and paste it in google. There should be a website where you can download it for free. I did it and now mine works fine. Hope this helps you! =]

update your media player or just use real player it works just as well. If you have a dell then there is a movie/dvd player already installed. So just look in your start programs and look for other options
