Belief in God is the biggest test in life for us - that's why believing is called 'having faith'. By nature, we're always looking for proof before we'll accept the truth of anything. Just remember doubting Thomas. (Weblink with story below). Things worth having are always difficult to obtain or achieve and there are always people who will try to influence others in a negative way when it comes to religion; this, along with our own doubts, is what I mean by being tested. I hope you will either keep faith, or find faith. Just noticed that you've also asked why we need bother about something that might not exist. I think it's because we need to believe that death isn't the end of everything; that there's more than life on earth. This is what Jesus taught his followers.

They don't have to be, sometimes, they just happen to be. IF there is a God, and his word the bible is true, THEN that is huge news! This is bigger than all of us, and a God like that knows when our first and last breath will be, created us, and has a future for us. That does happen to the most important kind of thing. Of course, this will be met with the ideas from many, that it may not exist....its natural. It is a search for truth.

It's the fun in believing in the things that makes them exist most. Have faith, my friend.

A better way to think about this is "Why do I put so much importance on things that do not exist?".
Why isn't the real, natural universe fulfilling your needs?
How can you change yourself so that you are satisfied with the wonders of reality?

That is the nature of belief.
You don't need to believe in say Motor cars, because you KNOW they exist.
UFO's on the other hand, some believe they exist, the rest of us are sane.
English is a funny old language, if only we all were to use it properly.

They're not the most important things BECAUSE they don't exist... They are the most important because most of them deal with what happens after you die. Some people may not believe in a heaven or a hell (I do).
If you don't know what happens when you die, think about eternity... It's a very long time. I, personally, don't want to risk getting it wrong:-)

The most important things to believe in do exist, you just need to look within yourself to find them........
Love - Love for yourself and your fellow man,
Hope - Hope that people, will learn the errors of their ways
Charity - Giving to those in need, what you don't need yourself.
Tolerance/Understanding - Understanding and being tolerant of your fellow man, and allowing them to believe what they will, to ensure they have a peaceful life.....
So tell me where do these things not exist? for i see them everyday, in the people i know and love, in strangers that stop to lend a helping hand, in the children that just might be sitting next to you right now, or the elderly neighbour, relative, or nursing home resident, wanting to talk about their lives.......They exist all you need to do, is open your eyes.

Silly or not, believing in things greater than themselves is an ingrained part of most everyone it appears. Call it an over active brain desperate for better, or to some of us, a deeper realization or seeking the ultimate that lies beyond our material world.

This is because if it didn't take any effort then it would not have much value.
It is easy to "believe" in what you can see, taste, touch, feel and smell. This is not belief.
Belief is when you cannot use your physical senses to verify the truth. Belief becomes faith when you act on what you believe the truth to be.
