There are a number of things:
Eat much smaller, more frequent meals.
Don't eat 3-4 hours prior to lying down or going to bed for the nite.
Avoid acidic foods: tomatoes/sauces, citrus...and caffeine & chocolate...and gravies can be rough too.
ELEVATE the head of your bed with risers under the feet of your headboard to keep you in a slightly inclined position while sleeping; which is when reflux can be the worst. Since it's the gastroesophageal sphincter (the ring that tightens between your stomach & esophagus) that is usually malfunctioning to cause your reflux in the first place.
There are OTC (over-the-counter) ant-acids you can purchase.
You should see a physician if it persists to be properly diagnosed. SEVERELY uncontrolled acid reflux CAN lead to esophageal cancer in some individuals if left untreated. SO BE SAFE!!!!!

I don't know, for me the only way I have been able to stop it is with medicine. I think it depends how severe it is. If you have regular acid reflux or heart burn talk to your doctor, but Prilosec OTC works awesome. It is not fast acting, but is intended to be used everyday, rather thatn at the time of an occurance.

I'm a nurse. OTC medication is useful. Also stop eating foods that can trigger the acid reflux responses.

Do a 2-week course of Prilosec, then continue to take a Pepcid in the morning and night. Avoid chocolate, caffeine, and carbonated beverages, and switch to 6 very small meals instead of 3 big ones. Never stuff yourself with food. If you have trouble sleeping, invest in a foam wedge.
If you get a bad attack, chug some pink bismuth (Like Pepto Bismol)
Report your progress every year to your doctor. You ought to have a scope done every 5 years to catch it in case it turns into cancer.

Watch the foods you eat - spicy foods and those hard to digest can give you acid reflux.

Nexium is the best thing for you.
It stops the acid and heals your esophagus.
I've tried EVERYTHING and Nexium is by far the best.
If you can't afford the doctor or the prescription than the next best thing is Prilosec OTC.....just take it everyday and not just for the 14 days or it will come right back.
