please someone help me,i have a 4 month old west highland terrior,i've had her since she was 8 weeks old but she's still not house trained and it's a major problem now, part of it is mine and my boyfriend's fault as we both work full time so it's hard but it's getting to the stage now where he's getting really fed up of her and her going to the toilet in the house and having to clean up after her and wants to get rid of her and of course i don't want to give her up cos i'm mad about her,if there are any vet nurses or animal experts reading this i'd really appreciate any help,in fairness she only goes in the one place in the house but she won't go outside at all,i could leave her out in the back for a while but when i let her in she comes straight in and goes in the house,i've tried moving the newspaper nearer the door like some people have told us but it hasn't worked for us,please help me keep my babe cos i can't get rid of her now!!!

Here are a couple of good sites to teach you to crate train her> http://www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html

http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pets_for_life_program/dog_behavior_tip_sheets/crate_training.html

As each method is a little different, just choose what bests suits your lifestyle..
You might also consider a doggy day care, as they will continue the house-training for you while you are at work..

Working full time is no excuse my boyfriend and I both work full time and we have a 9 month old and a 13 week old pup and they are house trained. You are just going to have to persevere with her take her into the garden and stay out there with her if she runs in take her straight back out and make her stay out there until she goes to the loo. When she does praise her lavishly DO NOT smack, shout or rub her nose in her mess if she does it in the house it is not the dogs fault. She will soon get the hint you will spend allot of time out in the garden but she will get there quicker than leaving it and not bothering. I may as well pitch a tent out in my garden at the mo my pups been ill and having accidents indoors but it's not his fault.
Don't just think of getting rid of her because she poos indoors get a Good industrial carpet cleaner and put something over the patch that she thinks is the loo and she may stop it. But I must stress you've had her ages and this is both your faults not hers. Get rid of him and keep her! Maybe he wants rid coz he's jealous you know what men are like lol!!

nobody can wave a magic wand and make your life perfect. You have a pup and leave her in isolation for 20 hours out of 24 and because you know this is not good but are too selfish to do what is best for the pup, life will carry on as it is doing now. You will not get her housetrained because you aren't home to do so. Your house will stink, you will have a dog who is afraid and cringes because she is being punished for not being physically able to hold on for the hours you work. You have given her permission to toilet in the house on newspapers, how is she supposed to know that it is OK to pee some places in the house but not others.
If you are any kind of dog lover, then do what is best for the dog and find her a home with someone who has the time to give her what she needs.
Do not do it the american way and shove her in a cage for 20 hours because it is convenient to you.

The way I house trained my Puppy (now a 2 1/2 year old) is by taking her to where I wanted her to do her watzzits and praise her when she did, it took about 2 weeks for the training to work but she has not messed for me since. I have also ignored her when she did do it in the house ie not make a fuss and call her a naughty puppy for doing it in the house. This method has worked in my family for quite a while....you can also give a reward for doing it outside, I still praise my dog after 2 1/2 years for doing it out side...hope this helps.

hi.i have 2 puppies(1 staffie and 1 Akita)my staffie is 8 weeks and does not go toilet on my floor and my Akita is 7 weeks and nearly trained.the best thing to do is buy the puppy training pads instead of newspaper.the training pads have a scent on them to encourage puppies to use it.(they are not expensive) put one in the spot your puppy goes to the toilet or if that place isn't practical then put it anywhere you want, then keep picking your puppy up and putting it on the mat and use a keyword like (toilet) or (pee).if you keep doing this as much as you can within a week your puppy should be using it more often.and then gradually move the pad towards the door (not too quick tho). and in between this keep taking your pup outside putting it on the grass and use your keyword and stand there until it goes toilet.every time you see your puppy using the mat or garden to go toilet really praise him as much as you can. hope this helps.

Get a crate, but make sure it doesn't have so much room in it that she'll just use the bathroom in the corner. While you're out of the house or not watching her put her in her crate with some water (no food), toys, and something comfortable to sleep on. Dogs don't like using the bathroom where they have to sleep, so if you make sure to take her outside enough she'll probably make an effort not to go to the bathroom in her crate.

You have to be attentive, though. If you just let her run around your home unwatched she'll just continue using the floor as a bathroom. Puppies have to use the bathroom a lot, it's part of the package, so you'll need to take her outside a lot. If you know she could have gone to the bathroom outside but decided to do it inside thump her on her nose a bit to let her know you're not happy about it, and take her back outside. Whenever she does use the bathroom outside praise the heck out of her. It's all about routine.

Good luck!

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.

Further to the above answers.... dogs do like to go where other members of their group go, its part of the bonding process. Take b/f and dog for a walk in the woods, and send them both behind the tree. It sounds crazy (or a joke, or both) but dog wants to do it where you do...

try spraying fox urine(sold at pet stores) on the ground outside in the yard....the dog should try to mark its territory by peeing over it. A lot of the times this does the trick
