What you're describing is called coprophagia. It's very common in puppies, and we also find that many dogs find cat poop particularly tempting. There is a good reason for this - puppy food and cat food are both very flavorful to encourage their respective eaters and keep their calorie intakes at appropriate levels. Since these foods are so yummy, and the digestive tract of the puppies and cats is so short, there is some flavor remaining in the feces. Plus, let's be honest with ourselves - is there much puppies won't eat?
Occasionally, the poop-eating is caused by a vitamin deficiency, but this is a more common cause in older dogs. Supplementing their diet with B12 can be an effective way of curbing the behavior, but your puppy is more likely suffering from the former reason.
There is hope! Most pet specialty stores, like PetsMart or Pet Supplies Plus, sell an additive called ForBid. It's a tasteless powder that you add to your dog's meals twice a day for a series of five days. The idea is that the remaining palatability is removed and the poop has an extra-foul taste. Over the series of five days, the puppy learns that the feces no longer taste good and the cycle of consuming it is broken. Some puppies who're less resistant to training will need a few days of extra additives, but almost all dogs do respond to this treatment.
It's also a good idea to be there to pick up the poop after she eliminates. It's okay to correct her when she does this, but don't be too tough on her. At fourteen weeks, she's still very impressionable, and we don't want her to have any bad associations with going potty outside, or we may have a whole new set of problems.
Good luck with your puppy. I know this is a very disgusting habit, but hopefully with the ForBid, you'll have an easy resolution.

There are a couple reasons why she may consider eating her own poo. There may be a nutritional need that isn't being met or she may have seen another dog doing it. Have your dogs leash on the next time you take her out to the bathroom. When she turns around to eat it, command her to "Leave it!" and hold tightly onto the the leash so she can't reach. Praise her for leaving it and clean the poo up right away. If it's not there she can't eat it.
Another method is to sprinkle some meat tenderizer or a product called Forbid on her food before she eats it. That way her poo will have a taste she can't stand.

Well i wouldn't worry. As disgusting as it may seem, she is just getting all the nutrients back from the poo, because poo is always food first and after it is pooed out there is still some nutrients left in the poo so the dog's instincs are too eat her own doggy doos to get back those nutrients. It id good for her don't worry. ;)

ok, definite you may positioned nasty stuff of their nutrition to deter them from eating it, yet in case you want to get to the muse of the large difficulty, there are 2 most popular causes canines devour their personal poo, as a fashion to have healthful canines, you do not favor to cover it up, yet fix it. a million) The canines probably as worms and should be dewormed. 2) seeing the way you reported she even eats the cats poo, that is more beneficial than in all probability the precedence, a nutrition deficiency. some thing lacking in her weight help application.try her on a significantly better larger high quality nutrition, or get some canines multivitamins at walmart or your puppy shop, and save on with the guidelines on the bottle. Like I reported to have a healthful canines you do not basically favor to cover it up, you want to fix it. And no canines poo would not flavor good to them, thats not why she is doing it, there's a deeper reason, and both I listed above are the most elementary 2.

A few things I've heard--first pick up all poop immedietly, don't let her eat it as much as possible. Second, its totally natural and some of them grow out of it. Third, a friends dog was going the same exact thing--he was eating a low quality dog food--switched to high quality and no longer eats the poo. Good luck!

Hi i breed Staffordsihre bull terriers and its very normal for puppies to eat their own poo because it's what they mother does from when they are born. Dont worry about it just let the pup know that it's not suppose to do it.

Be happy! She cleans up after herself! Haha, ok, seriously, my puppy did the same thing. She most likely did it once, and now, since you have not corrected the action, she has developed a routine. Watch her while she goes, and immediately as she stops going, call her name and take her attention away from her business. Praise her and praise her. Eventually, she'll forget about the whole routine and create a new one!

my puppy was doing exactly the same.(it can be a behavioral thing).have you wormed it?the stuff from the shops doesnt work your best going to the vets for panacur paste its not expensive.if its not that then give your puppy that dry complete food(but make sure you soak it first).if that doesnt work feed it some pineapple(because they dont like the taste of it in there poo).it was a vet that recommended this to me. and if all that fails then try your puppy on 'science plan' dry complete puppy food.now our puppy doesnt eat it anymore.

This may sound disguisting but a dogs own poo is a delicacy to them. Think of a cheesecake or your secret cravings, and that is what this is to a dog. Who knows why but it's proven. If you want to get them to stop there are a few methods you can do. I had the same problem with my puppy. But a few drops of hot sauce on a piece of poop before she eats it. The dogs won't like it and will relate the taste with the poop. You may have to do it a couple times, but not many. They'll catch on and trust me won't try it again!
