"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Does that sound like an invitation to you ??

The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the people of the United States from the people of France. She stands in the middle of the harbor of New York City. She is a symbol of hope and freedom for immigrants. and it was placed in the New York harbor (were most immigrants came in ships) as a welcome to the land of freedom.

amen... America has always and will always struggle with immigration because people are afraid of change.

honestly, there are more americans stealing our social security and not paying taxes than there are illegal immigrants doing so.

So why doesn't everyone worry first about americans not doing their civic duty?

Yes it does in fact sound like an invitation. I understand the basic history behind the statue of liberty.....were you looking for something a little more specific in relation to immigration and the status of today's situation?

The Statue Of Liberty is a monument dedicated to freedom and liberty. She never meant that foreigners have the right to violate America's immigration laws.

There is a big difference between then and now. The inscription still does not over ride our laws, and our laws say you must enter legally, fill out the proper forms and go through the proper channels.
In the world we live in today, we have to know who is in our country and why. The lives of legal immigrants and our citizens are at stake as well as our way of life. Stop trying to justify illegal immigration because you cannot. You can sympathize with them for wanting to be here, but you cannot justify it.

That was a poem written by a young girl participating in a contest in a time that the USA encouraged IMMIGRANTS to come here LEGALLY to build this country up. NOT to encourage ILLEGAL invaders to come here and live off the tax paid assistance programs put in place for LEGAL citizens in time of need. We don't need illegal immigrants now or ever. We need LESS "legal" immigrants.

Actually I have. I think it is fascinating that children helped raise money for it with pennies. I also had to sing the poem at the base for 8th grade graduation.

Yes, I have read it.

Yes, it sounds like an invitation. And millions from every corner of the globe have benefited from our generosity.

What is your point?

Again that has nothing to do with illegal immigration. Let them apply and come here legally. Not sneak across the boarder. Apples and oranges again.

The statue of liberty does NOT say "Give me your lazy, your impotent slobs who yearn to collect welfare". That's the issue here. You libs created a nanny society where we give handouts to anyone too lazy to work, and now you want to import millions of people too lazy to work.

Not with my tax dollars.
