Bush taking part is simply because, as president, he's expected to.
But you're right, chanukah is a second tier Jewish Holiday. However, with the advent of the less observant strains of Judaism (Conservative, Reform, non-affiliated) ritual has replaced substance in the area of observance. The Passover Seder and lighting the Menorah are, sadly, the last vestiges of Judaism practice by many Jews. As such, chanukah has risen in importance to a great many of these jews.

Hanukkah is a minor feast because it was not handed down by G-d, however we know that G-d blessed us by keeping the oil burning, also is about what G-d did for our people then and Because now more than ever it is the hope that soon our Temple will be rebuilt. It has nothing to do with the christians christmas, it is nice to know that even the christian writings bear our feast out though and sorry that some of my people call your day xmas, they need to read the Torah.

Why do Christians make such a big deal out of Hanukkah? i.e. Bush participated in a Hanukkah celebration.
Christianity is an offshoot of Judaism.

Bush is no longer Christian. When he worshiped with the Jews he blended two religions together which removes him from the status of Christian. He did it to gain support for his terrible mistakes he has made. It's time for him to retire.
