when guys put 'xxx' (three kisses) at the end of a conversation on msn or an email/txt message, do they really mean it or isit just sum sort of decoration to them?

Cant say for every guy, but when i use xxx its meant has a term of affection with a closing kiss or two xx

usually i get it from friends (girls not guys!) who just use it in a friendly way, no flirting intended. I might do it back simply out of politeness

Well, it was originally a way of saying they care, but now it really does not mean anything. Its like saying, .................Love, Mark. Its a complementary closing. Most of them don't know what it means.
