Obviously because he is still looking for other women. In his mind, he is single. This is the kind of man you need to run from if you're looking for a serious relationship.
Never trust that someone you meet on-line is telling the truth in their profile or in their communications with you.

I understand your point. MY SPACE has a big reputation and people compete to get friends they don't even know. Men claim to be single so they could have females exposing to them. Honestly men have a option to switch it to "in a relationship" so what's the hassle with them ? Good question. I will dump a loser boyfriend if he does that or even puts his page on private or won't show me as his true woman on my space. Men do cheat on MY SPACE that's why they put their pages in private so their girlfriends won't find out about other girlfriends.

Myspace is all about competition. Looks, how many friends you have and for the guys it's how many butt-naked chicks you have on your friend list and for the girls it's how many sexy guys you have. If you have IN A RELATIONSHIP plastered on the front of your page SOME respectable beings will simply look at your page and move on~ Guys are greedy...they want it all!
That's just my oppinion though.

sometimes it is complicated.
I have a situation.
there is a girl that absolutely loves me, it is way too long distance so I have broken it off.
she still considers herself in a relationship with me no matter how many times I tell her that I am not her boyfriend.
so It may seem that I have a girlfriend but I do not.

Hundred of reasons. That person wanted to get more. That person is not serious about the partner. That person is trying to confuse people. For fun, maybe lazy too.

There is not much thought needed to answer this question. The guy does not respect his significant other and likes the attention he receives from other women online.

Because a woman wont jump for a man that says "taken" or "married" or even "married with children".
Simple enough

because they are loosers and some lady's don't care if the man is in a relationship or not.... Both examples are terrible excuses for either gender and make it tough for the sincere....

Umm, who cares. Oh, and just so you know, in a year or so, Myspace will out pace infidelity, financial and substance abuse problems as the number one relationship killer. COMBINED!
