I was given a bottle of sake as a Christmas gift. I haven't had it for years and I am not sure how to serve it. I was thinking about breaking it out with my family on Christmas Eve. Should it be served hot or chilled? If hot - how hot? Can you nuke it? Or heat it on a stove?

In Japan sake is served cold, warm or hot, depending on the preference of the drinker, the quality of the sake and the season. Sake is one of the few alcoholic beverages that is regularly consumed hot. Typically, hot sake is consumed in winter and cold sake is consumed in summer.

The most common way to serve sake in the United States is to heat it to body temperature (37°C/98.6°F), and chilled sake (10°C/50°F) is growing in popularity. Heat over low heat on stove top, microwaving is not recommended.

Sake is served in shallow cups, called choko.

That depends on how you think people will be receptive to the taste. Chilling sake mellows the flavor, giving it a sweet and almost watery perception.

If you decide to serve it warm, it will bolden the flavor. DO NOT MICROWAVE YOUR ALCOHOL. Put it on the stove over low heat and covered. Check/stir occasionally and do NOT let it boil (microwave and boiling will cause the alcohol to evaporate). Serve in *small* glasses (assuming no sake set is available).

If you decided to go the chilled route, just throw the bottle in your fridge about a day in advance and serve. Be careful about portioning, however... It is VERY easy to lose track of how much chilled sake has been consumed (since it is so much less flavorful) and therefore to get blisteringly drunk.

There are both chilled and warmed, I wouldn't nuke it just heat it on the stove for a bit. I was at a wedding reception and it was in July they just served it room temperature. So after you open it give all ways a try if you want.

It depends on what kind of sake you have. Some are meant to be served warm, and some cold. Your traditional, or more "clear" sake should be served warm. If you have a cloudy, or milky looking sake, serve it chilled.

Personally, I wouldn't microwave it, but that's just my preference.
