guys don't think ahead... he might not start making plans till after Christmas. Sometimes you gotta take the bull by the horns.
Mention to him that your friend is throwing a New Year's Eve party, that you'll probably go, and invite him. (or, mention that you heard such-and-such club is known for throwing a great New Year's Ever party, and you've always wanted to go). If he has other plans swirling about his brain, he'll mention it. If not, you can get him to settle plans now.
