I'm at my mom's house for the holiday. However when my step dad isn't here, the dog look so depress and sad, it would coil in one spot and not go anywhere at all. It would act like as if his best friend pass away.

The moment my step dad come home, he's all fine and normal himself.

What's up with this? How do I get it to stop acting and looking so depress when my step dad isn't around?

My mom, half brother, and sister would pet it a lot. It hardly get up to play at all. It's not like they're ignoring the dog or anything at all.

Your putting your human emotions on the dog. He's not miserable, he's just waiting for his pack leader to come home.

Have him take the dog with him? People don't know why dogs act the way they do. Does your mom play with it while he is gone? Maybe she doesn't pay attention to it and it knows just to wait for your step dad to come home?

One of my dogs is overly attached to my husband and when he leaves she just sits on the couch or at the door staring out, waiting for him to come back. She already has separation anxiety so when he leaves without her I do things to distract her. We go for walks, or I will throw her in the car and run a couple errands, play in the yard, etc. It helps her a lot.

Don't LET the dog mope. Get the leash and take him for a walk! He surely can't stay miserable while on a walk...

The dog is too attached to your step dad.
Your mother has to pay more attention to the dog. He is too lonely and he has to go out more often.
The dog has to feel that he is part of the family even your step dad is not home. Dogs have feelingsfor things.

This dog considers your stepdad to be "his" human, and the alpha in the "pack" (family). Many dogs are one-person dogs ... even though they like other people and will accept affection from other people, they are only happy when "their" person is with them. Not much you can do to change this ... just give him affection and love .. he is appreciating it, even if he still looks sad.

Both of my dogs are this way with me ... and always have been.

Rub under the dog's chin and on the sides of the face and talk sweetly to him.
