the links listed above are better...but if you don't want to waste time....
The tooth is made up of enamel (the outer shell) dentin (the iner porous shell and the pulp (the nerve chamber). Each root of the tooth has at least one canal. A "root canal" is when you clean out and disinfect every canal. I guess this would be the main type. There are other procedures though:
Pulpectomy....which sounds the same as a root canal is also the removal of nerve in the chamber and canals.
Pulpotomy...is the removal of the chamber nerve...this can be both "partial" and "complete"
Apicoectomy...is the surgical type of endodontics with the removal of part of the base of the root with root canal therapy. This however is done from the othe side of the tooth surgically.
I might be missing something and don't recall ever doing any thing different.
..
Oh by the way root canals are charged in the united states under different codes depending on which tooth needs the canal.. In general front teeth have 1 canal...middle teeth have 1 to 2 canals...and molars have 3 to 4 canals.

the expensive one, and the one you can´t afford... root canal treatment is been ALMOST the same for decades, there´s more chemicals, Lasers and rotary instruments than ever, but the complete removal of the pulp, shapement of the canal and obturation (filling) is the same as when george bush sr. was stalking barbara
