I have GERD and I've been having excruciating heartburn lately, despite being on Nexium 40mg 2xday, and eliminating all food/drink triggers from my diet. I've tried the usual dairy/milk to help ease the pain, but nothing works. At this point, I am taking pepto bismol, which isn't very effective, either. I've also tried other acid-reducers (mylanta, etc.) to no avail. What can I do to beat the pain? I am having an endoscopy done at the end of January to help figure out what's going on ... just trying to make things as comfortable as possible until then. Thank you!

I don't know who told you to drink milk to ease the pain, but that is so wrong. While milk helps immediately for the discomfort, it has a rebound effect and you will be in more discomfort later on.

I used to have heart burn almost every night. A few months back I started taking 2 teaspoons of raw organic apple cider vinegar in a small amount of water or ice tea. I take this prior to eating dinner. It has helped and I no longer have heartburn at night. You can take it at lunch also if you like. Another thing I have been taking is digestive enzymes. There's been a lot on the topic about enzymes and how we may not be getting enough of them in our foods. The enzymes help break down the foods and help so that we don't get heartburn.

I take Omerprazole once a day and that helps me. If you are taking two Nexium twice a day I wonder if your doctor is diagnosing you correctly. Have you had the upper GI? I had terrible pains too until I started on my once a day pill. Since then life is all together different. I could hardly work or anything. Nexium is supposed to be real good, so if youu aare still having problems I think it is something your doctor is overlooking. You said the end of January for another test, but you problem is serious and can harm you. I think you need it sooner, maybe a change of doctors too. I go to the VA, that is not always possible for me. I hope you get to feeling better, I know what you are going through.

You are going to have to stick in there until then but here are some tips that may help you until then. Eat regularly but do not eat right before bed because laying down will cause acid in the stomach to rise. Do not exercise right after a meal either, wait at least 2-3 hours before doing so. Don't use alcohol, drink caffeine, and no smoking. All of these will only stimulate your heartburn. When sleeping try to elevate your head and sleep on your left side. Get comfortable and don't wear tight clothing that will put strain on your stomach. I hope some of these tips will help you until your endoscopy. My boyfriend has GERD and he has many problems with it also. I wish you the best of luck.

Be sure you sit up for at least 30-60 minutes after eating a meal. Elevate the head of your bed. This can be done by putting legs of you bed up on blocks at the head end of the bed. You can also consider buying a wedge type pillow for sleeping. Pepto Bismal is not a good choice for trying to releive GERD symptoms. Since your symptoms have increased considerably call your doctor and talk to his nurse and report this to him. The nurse will get his advice as to what he wants you to do. He may also see about getting that endoscopy done sooner than the end of January since your symptoms are worse.

other answer is good ....another tip is when you must lie down, if you cannot stay elevated or even if you can for that matter....lie on your left side as this helps to prevent stomach acid from backing up/out....this really works as i have had to do it for years now
