There are many types of pencils, some are numbered and some have letters. Lower numbers are softer and darker. Below zero the pencils use letters like H and B. Go to an art supply store if you want to get some of these. They are very much better for drawing and shading.

The number 2 just indicates the level of hardness. For instance, 1 would be the hardest and anything higher would be softer. Other pencils are used in art for various shading purposes. This particular pencil (#2) is used most often because its softness can be best read by scantron machines and is just the most common.

I would really minimize the incident since the assistant principal referred to a 5 year old stabbing another kid when it didn't penentrate anything. I would think that it was more of a poke and not all that serious. She really needs to investigate whether it is malicious before calling you with this rubbish I don't believe anybody should be whipped, i don't hit my kids at all. As far as the suggestion to write a letter, an average 5 year old isn't able to write letters. Consequences should be immediate, grounding a 5 year old, where are they going to go? Some of these responders are ridiculous

It's the hardness of the lead, which determines how much of it gets onto the paper when you're using it to write.
When I was in high school, I used a #3 pencil for everything except the Scantron tests.

Pencils come in an assortment of both hard and soft, and can be found in most art or office supply stores. The set I have consists of twelve pencils, ranging in hardness from 4H to 6B. The 'H' stands for hardness, the 'B' stands for blackness, and HB is for hard and black pencils. The hardest is a 9H, followed by 8H, 7H, 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, and H. F is the middle of the hardness scale; then comes HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B, and 9B, which is the softest. Another grading method uses numbers; the equivalents would be #1=B, #2=HB, #2-1/2=F, #3=H, and #4=2H. The most commonly used writing pencil is the #2 (HB grade), which is fairly soft, contains more graphite, and leaves a dark mark.

"No. 2’s use medium weight graphite, which makes them the ideal pencils for general writing. 18th-century French pencil maker Nicolas-Jacques Conté created the number system based on a pencil’s hardness (the higher the number, the harder the graphite), and we’ve been using it ever since.

But let’s not forget the other numbers of pencils out there. No. 1’s are made with soft graphite and tend to smudge, and are often used to record bowling scores. No. 3’s and above indicate harder pencils that are most often used for drafting, when you need a sharp, strong point."

The number of the pencil has to do with the softness of the lead. A number 2 pencil has a nice quality lead for writing - easy to use, easy to see, easy to erase.
