Is an amalgum filling actually made out of porcelin? or some sort of plastic? Should these fillings hurt a week after the filling? It's still very sensitive.

Do dentists prefer to do silver filings because they are easier and faster? I chose the amalgum and he had no trouble with it since he was actually replacing an amalgum filing anyways in it's place. Why would he have wanted to use a silver at first though? I chose not to have the silver filling, because of it holding cold longer. thanks for any help.

ok... you sound confused :)
amalgam filling IS silver... it's been silver for the last.. mmm.. 80 years? they were the best possible material since they have mercury and it kills any bacteria, plus they are easy to put because tooth does not have to be totally dry.
for the last 20-25 years dentists started to put white-toothcolored fillings. The materials improved with time and now good dentist can put white filling as good as silver, it usually bonded to your tooth to decrease the sensitivity and increase the lifespan.
some dentists still use a lot of amalgam tough, just because it is a very trusted material.

amalgum is silver , composites are a plastic material and porcelian are usually used for crowns but some dentists are starting to do fillings with them but they are expensive and have to be made in a lab. Im guessing you probably got a composite filling which look nice and have less sensitivity, but the lifespan is half that of amalgam.
