It was a social status thing, it was a common practice among the wealthy to have all of the burial arrangements made well in advance, so myrrh would be like your grandparents purchasing you a burial plot and a casket at your birth, kind of creepy but in that day a sign of great wealth and influence. It was a very expensive spice.

The wise men were Zoroastrian priest-kings from Persia. The gifts were tokens to see what the child would become. If he took the gold, it would suggest he would be a king. If he took the frankincense, he would be a priest. If he took the myrrh, he would be a prophet. Jesus took all three.

Myrrh was used to prepare a dead person for burial. It was a really odd gift to bring (like bringing a little coffin to a baby shower). The wise men must have known what Jesus had come to do and their gifts reflected that.

Myrrh was an embalming ointment, and very valuable. The Myrrh was symbolic of his future death on the Cross.

Myrrh was used as an anointment for burial of the dead. Tradition is one of the shepherds (we know as the three kings) presented it as a gift to the Child Jesus foreshadowing his death.

All of the items given to Jesus were very expensive. They were the sort of gifts only given to royalty. Myrrh was very expensive.
