I think there are many reasons both good and bad as to why people talk to you on the computer but not IRL. First of all if you are extremely shy or lack social skills, conversing on the net provides you a means to talk without the fear of being rejected or made fun ofor people ignoring you. Talking on the computer gives you the opportunity to command people's undivided attention. It also provides a way of talking to people across the world--you can chat with people from China, the UK, France,
South Africa, etc., all at the comfort of your computer screen without racking up frequent flier miles.
Some of the bad reasons includes that there is a lack of accountability when you discuss things on the computer. It is harder to take words that can be spiteful or hurtful once you type them down. You can easily take back what you said to someone when you talk to them face to face. There is also the potential that something that could have been said in jest can be taken as an insult and because you are behind a computer you cannot get the person's vocal inflections and body language to find out the truth or to even ask what he or she meant by what he or she said. I think this is how many flame wars start. In addition, some predators (like in MySpace for instance--but I emphasize this is not the ONLY site) look for naive people to take advantage of.
Talking on the computer does provide a comforting cloak of anonymity but there are some that use that anonymity and abuse it.

because those are two totally different relationships, though they both exist concurrently, in their own separate and alternate universe. the sooner you realize that what happens on the computer, and what happens in real life, can be two totally different and separate things, the better off you'll be.

and quite honestly, if they can deal with you on the computer, when they can edit themselves and rewrite what they've said and take it back before the email or the message has truly been sent, and they stumble to talk to you in real life, face to face, you have to wonder what type of person you're dealing with in the first place. how quickly do they respond to you on the computer, and how thorough is their response? do they respond quickly, efficiently, or do they take a lot of time and consideration into what they say? do they respond to you later on in the day, the next day or the next week? these are all things to take into consideration; and, since that's all you have to go by, that will tell you what you're dealing with. but no real communication in public; you don't have much of a friend to begin with ...

Sometimes it's easier to talk on the computer instead of face-to-face. It's a self-esteem and self-confidence thing. Personally, it's way easier for me to talk to people online. I'm horrible at starting conversations in person unless I know who I'm talking to.

Sometimes it's easier to disclose things by computer, telephone or another method other than face to face. You can express yourself move openly and be yourself without being shy or feeling overwhelmed by how the other person will respond to you.
