It comes from the Greek: "a" (not) + "gnosis" (knowing). An agnostic says that they do not know whether there is a God or not, and that they don't believe such knowledge is possessed by anyone at this point.

That since there's no way to prove or disprove the existence of God or a Higher Power, they do not claim to "know" one way or the other.
