There is nothing to understand. The bible is a compilation (and a poor one at that) of bronze-age jewish myths and fables. Nothing more.

Totally hear ya buddy. It is confusing and misleading. My theory is the bible was written as a way of recording history. But like anyother human bearing witness to an event.. perception comes into play. So these historical events were witnessed by many people with many different backgrounds thus producing some rather colorful depictions of hat they had seen or heard. I agree with som many of the answers I see on this question. About all the death that God caused... well again that is just another story. I think there is thin threads of truth woven thru the bible, like based on a true story kind of thing. But the storys have been embellished apon to capture the readers imaginantion, and make the storys more re-tellable. We do it today. The disasters that the bible mentions like the flood, well science>along with history seems to show more and more evidence of this being a natural occurance, a cycle where the earth regenerates or evolves. Lets play the tape today... what is happeneing can be seem from christians eyes as beginnings of the apocolypse or from Al Gore as Global Warming. The Ancient Mayans created a calendar that has been pretty accurate in predicting these earthly cycles. December 21 2012 is when the next 'rotation' of this calendar is said to take affect. This question all comes down to perception what we are told is what we believe, what we believe is what we see. For instance "Dr Tome blah blah blah, conducts an experiment he takes an Aborigine tribes man and has him sit on a rock near a draw bridge, where he is to watch the boats come and the bridge rise and the boat passes thru... The aborigine when asked what makes the bridge go up say the boat comes the bridge goes up. He has no knowledge of the mechanics of the draw bridge and can only pull his answer from what he has witnessed. He does not see the man in the tower who pushes the button causing the bridge to go up, so there for that man does not exist for him. Our minds are very powerful creators. Religion I think has dumbed this abilty to create for ourselves down to nothing... probably done by over zealous men eager to have power of others ... creating scary fables like what we see in the bible. Any way long answer but I think you get it.. our minds are the key. Just remember we can choose to believe whatever we want. So Question your Reality... daily.

Yes there are many contradictions in the Bible.
And there are many ways to interpret it depending on who's doing the interpreting. I believe that a lot of it is parables, stories told to teach us certain lessons (like Jonah and the Whale) . . . . Or Moses parting the Red Sea . . . the Bible has been interpreted zillions of times, all diff. languages, etc. isn't it possible Moses parted a sea of REEDS? And that over the years isn't it possible that an E got dropped somewhere? Of course it is. But you know it SAYS red sea so that's what it must be of course :) Some people are just afraid to think outside the box . . . those are the people that take it at face value. I am by no means knocking the Bible as I do believe in God and Jesus Christ, but I try to use my own brain when I read it . . . and not believe someone's else's interpretation just because I am told that I should. Read it and draw your own conclusions.

Because I dont humanize God. People always point out how can God be both vengeful and loving, because our onl expierence that as humans we can not be both. Or that God can be fallible or confused, because as Humans we can be.
God is not like us, except in image alone. He is not to be humanized, so whatever he is, is beyond what we can understand. And the Bible was begun well over 2000 years ago, written by MANY men over centuries of time, men that never met one another, and spoke different laungages, and yet the bible is consistent, how can that be, unless something bigger than us had a hand in it. The original documents have never be altered before they were translated. The KJV translation was accurate.

Actually, people do know what happened 2000 years ago.
Rome had historians that recorded events in all of their "colonies" (of which Israel was one). Josephus Flavius was the Roman historian during the time of Christ. His writings support what the Gospels say about socio-political events of that time. The Jewish faith was at the core of life in Israel, and thoroughly intertwined with social and political aspects of daily life.
As for the Old Testament? The schools in Israel use the Torah to teach children about the history of their nation.
Do some research. Even on the Internet you can find reliable websites. LOL

Sorry fellow. Understanding it would take many sessions and many hours of sincere study and discussions. Also one has to have an open mind to the explanations and realize that disasters, death, and everything else that might not fit into what we might consider a just God, is not Gods fault. He allows those things to happen for many reasons not the least being free agency. If God were to direct every facet of every event in everybodys lives then our purpose here on this planet is of no consequence. but it all goes much deeper that what I have mentioned and it would take a lot more time and space than yahoo is willing to give.

the Bible wasnt written 2000 years ago - it started to be written 3500 years ago and ended 2000 years ago - no there are no contradictions in scripture, not if you take the time to learn how to read the Bible, knowing who is writting it, when they wrote it and to who the intended readers were
but how do I believe it b/c there is evidence that the New Testament is true - from who the writers were, how there stories were all matched, how they all suffered from them - no one benefited from believing in those days - to many other ways we know the Gospels are accurate
if then they are accurate then the OT is true and accurate too since Jesus fulfilled some 40 prophesis from them
do the leg work and find out for yourself then you will know

Your lack of faith and believing changes nothing.
A better question might be (for you to ponder) is, how can I not believe the Holy Bible?
God offers mercy before judgment, every time. Don't turn away and not accept it as many have done in the past.
The Bible and it's principles apply as much to our lives today as it did when it was written.
God gives you free will and the choice is yours. What path will you choose? Be very careful, your decision is a matter of life and death.
May you find the peace, joy and love of our Lord, Jesus this Christmas Season.

Mr. Lennon,
That's really it, isn't it? Those that believe that the Bible talks about what happened back then are believer's in something that they call the truth.
How can they believe it? I would call it 'inspiration' and proven in life by the experiences in those that believe. That's what happened to me, and is still happening.
One thing becomes very clear in the Bible (amongst many other things), God only works certain blessings in the lives of those who trust Him.
Those that do not trust Him; it is said that God lets them do what they are doing. He might even give them more reason to believe what they believe. That's also biblically supported.

Bible predictions of things to happen in the future confirm the inspiration of Scripture as they come to pass. Notice the following examples of fulfilled Bible prophecies:
A. Four world empires to arise: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome (Daniel chapters 2, 7, 8).
B. Cyrus to be the warrior to capture Babylon (Isaiah 45:1-3).
C. After Babylon's destruction, it would never be inhabited again (Isaiah 13:19, 20; Jeremiah 51:37).
D. Egypt would never again have a commanding position among the nations (Ezekiel 29:14, 15; 30:12, 13).
E. Earth-shaking calamities and fear toward the end of time (Luke 21:25, 26).
F. Moral degeneracy and decline of spirituality in the last days (2 Timothy 3:1-5).
The 66 books of the Bible were written:
1. On three continents.
2. In three languages.
3. By about 40 different people (kings, shepherds, scientists, attorneys, an army general, fishermen, priests, and a physician).
4. Over a period of about 1,500 years.
5. On the most controversial subjects.
6. By people who, in most cases, had never met.
7. By authors whose education and background varied greatly.
Yet, though it seems totally inconceivable,
1. The 66 books maintain harmony with each other.
2. Often new concepts on a subject are expressed, but these concepts do not undermine what other Bible writers say on the same subject.
