Like so many others who answered it is a personal preference.
If you use a live tree be sure and keep it watered at all times. You might even want to turn the heat down a bit as it will dry out more quickly with artificial heat. Be sure and dispose of it before it becomes too dry as this poses a fire hazard. You don't want to be wishing you asked Santa for a new home!
If you prefer the live smell but prefer not to deal with the hassle of pine needles, water. You can always buy some fresh greens to create the live tree smell.
You've had some great advice from so many, so I won't repeat all that over. If you do buy a artificial tree remember the more tips advertised the more tree like it will be. Usually spending a little more will get you a tree that will last for years. The new slimline trees are great for small spaces. Prelit trees make decorating even easier. And no lights to wind up! You can get a 'bag' for your Christmas tree in almost any store that sells them, usually in the Christmas storage solutions section. These are a great way to protect your investment without trying to stuff it back in the original box. They are usually inexpensive.
The more time you take 'fluffing' the tree by spreading out the tips and branches the better it will look.

It really depends on you. Here's my experience with both:
A few years ago, I bought a fake one, pre-lit. After 2 years with it, I missed the smell of a live one, so I had a live one the next time. I continued with the live one the next 2 Christmas' in fear of spiders being in the fake one, even though I had it in a tree bag. Last year, I went a little crazy... I bought a real one, too early and it started turning brown, so I bought another live one, after about 1 week, it started smelling funny, kinda like pumpkins. At this point, Christmas is only a week away and the smell didn't seem to bother anyone but me, but it was really bothering me, so dumped that one and I got out the fake one and set it up. After taking an hour to put the decorations on, I plugged it in to be "wowed" and 80% of the lights weren't working! Apperently some of the wires had been chewed through. either by our cats, or maybe a rat... anyways, I spent the next 6 hours taking all of those pre-lit lights off. I spent 8 hours total on a tree that day. This year, I have the fake one up and probably will from now on, if I get an itch for the "smell", I'll buy a wreath. So many fake trees look beautiful now, very real looking. And with the prices of real ones now, a fake one might be a good investment. Although, I'd recommend getting one that's not pre-lit, the lights are wound very well around the branches and if you have the same problem I did, you'll spend hours taking them off. Not fun...

There is no right or wrong answer to your question. Some people prefer live, others prefer artificial... Here are the differences and some things to remember.
Live: You will only be able to use it once unless you live in England where most live trees are sold with the roots still on so as to be able to replant the tree. Live trees smell better but if not taken care of properly can be a fire hazard. To lessen the possibility of fire, you must cut the base of the tree when you arrive home, even if it was just cut when you bought it. Place the tree right away in warm water with bleach (just a capful) in the water. Xmas trees are resin trees. When the tree is cut, nature makes it so that the resin goes to where the cut is, sorta like a natural band aid. That makes it almost impossible for the tree to absorb water. With lights on it, being indoors and almost impossible for the tree to drink, it will dry very quickly, drop its needles everywhere and basically, it will become a fire hazard. Remember to water it daily, as it drinks a lot.
Artificial: It will last for years and years. It is obliged by law to be made with non fire hazardous materials. They are easy to put up, easy to take down and can even be resold if you decide to change for a real live tree.
If you do decide to use an artificial tree, glade has some great xmas smelling plug ins that will make it seem your tree is real...
Whatever you decide, I wish you Happy Holidays.

IMO, artificial. I mean I had the experience of going and making family memories with getting a live tree and it is nice. But I do prefer getting a beautiful white or green artificial tree and having my children pick out the size they want and/or the color they want and that way the are really excited about it and very excited about decorating "their" tree! Either way it makes them feel big and included and instead of keeping it for next year we get a new one each year for them to pick out. They pick out the decorations and the star they want on top and it is just a wonderful family event. So, either way you can make family memories but I do it with the whole thing, they decide whether they want a white or gree tree and make the whole day theirs!

Live trees are bad to use for the environment, but they sent a marvelous, cozy, real feeling. Artificial ones are better for the eniro because they are plastic and you can use them year after year. They also hold the perfect shape. But these are a little more like the ones you'd find in rich old people's homes and in the centre of a mall. I like real ones. They're more Christmassy.

Depends:
1. Live-you get the family experience & memory of getting a tree. But it will drop needles & you will have to buy one each year.
2. Artificial-easy to set up & you will have family memories instead of just setting up the tree. They don't smell as nice.

Live all they way. Live gives your livingroom a more natural look and a pine scent that makes Christmas seem even more real!!
Hope I helped! Have a very Merry Christmas!
