Being born is the most traumatic part of any life. Suddenly it's not warm and calm. It's cold and light and noisy. Suddenly, a baby has to breathe on his own (and will feel hungry for the first time).
Crying lets them use their lungs and fill them up fully (for the first time) as well as to let everyone know that things are different.
(P.S. pay more attention in your Grammar class)

They don't always. My daughter was perfectly healthy and didn't cry at all. She just looked around at everyone and everything with these huge wide open eyes like she was drinking every little detail in. She still does that whenever we go to a new place or meet new people. I think it's just part of her personality. But you can't really blame a baby for crying can you? I mean they were warm and cozy and now they're all wet and cold and not all wrapped up. It would make anyone cry.

It helps the baby clear the lungs. During delivery, the baby experiences a major rush of adrenaline that makes it cry, clearing the lungs for oxygen immediately after birth.

First of all, if you were squished through a tiny whole and your head were contorted, you would probably cry too...in fact, you did! No, that was me being silly. Babies cry first to get their first breath of air. It's natures way of making sure their lungs are working. Plus, you have to imagine the shock of being in a fluid filled world then coming out into a cold bright room with lots of people.

Crying is one of the only sounds a tiny baby can make. It's a reflex. At birth, crying is how the baby fills it's lungs with air. A baby not crying would be cause for concern. :)

Once in your life for nine months you lived and developed in your mothers belly right? when a child is born you are taking them out of the familiar and into a total new and different enivroment. Plus when the baby does cry at birth it lets the doctors know the childs lungs are working right.

They have been held for nine months in a perfect environment. They were warm, comfortable, content, well fed, etc. Suddenly, they are brought into a room with cooler temperatures, bright lights, unknown surroundings, and as they realize that they must now breathe on their own, they sometimes cry, but not always.
My first son didn't cry, he just looked around and checked everything out.

Imagine how the baby feels, after living in a safe warm bubble for all those months, then being violently kicked out (the contractions of the uterus do literally push out the baby) into this bright room with all these weird sights and noises. Talk about over-stimulation of the senses, and COLD! It must be worse than when your hot water suddenly runs out while you're in the shower in the dead of winter and though you WERE warm, now you're cold, wet, and usually still with soap and/or shampoo all over you. Not fun.

New born babies are made to cry to ensure that air goes in their lungs and they are breathing.
