Thanksgiving in the USA represents (approximately) what the Indians fed the starving Pilgrims. Turkey was one of those items.

As to the rest of the year, a turkey is quite an undertaking to cook...
1. For a fully frozen bird, it takes about 3 days to defrost in the refrigerator.
2. Depending upon the size it can take about 4 hours. Add stuffing, you increase the time by another 1 to 2 hours.
3. Price... Around the holidays turkey is available for $1 to 1.50 per pound. The rest of the year is around $2.50 per pound.

That's why turkey is usually reserved for special occasions or holidays. People just don't have the time to spend cooking the bird without the day off.

As far as I know, people eat turkey all year, every day. Now as far as the big bird being served on thanksgiving this is just a tradition followed down from the pilgrims and our ancestors. Also I think that people don't want to go into that much preparation very often. I think that having it on thanksgiving makes it a very special occasion that many people worldwide look forward to. Its just that special time of year~!!!!

I think people eat Turkey all year long...Turkey sandwiches, come on!

However, I think people don't cook a whole turkey from scratch except on Thanksgiving. That's because it takes so long. And a whole turkey is really too much food for a family.

I am ready for it though- Turkey for you, turkey fo'me!

well, all i can tell you is why i would not bother to cook a turkey unless it was a holiday and i was having family over.
1) turkeys are kind of big. i don't mind leftovers but not that much.
2) the prep and cook time involved. why would i go through all that trouble for a couple of people?

Because the Pilgrims couldn't get their hands on prime rib. If they had, we would be serving that for Thanksgiving and other holidays.
