Contrary to popular opinion, the bible doesn't condemn debating. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 tells us to "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." while Jude 1:3 mentions to "contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints". For the most part, debate amongst those of the same denomination occurs when some decide to voice a difference of opinion regarding doctrinal issues. However, God is not interested in man's opinion regarding things that he's commanded. You will either obey him and reap the reward, or disobey him and face the consequences. Opinions only cause division, just as it did in the Lord's church. God warned that many would fall away from the faith and give heed to doctrines of devils and such (1 Timothy 4:1-3). That's how denominations came about. Jesus said that "upon this rock I will build my church" in Matthew 16:18. Jesus then told the disciples, soon to be known as the apostles, to go into all the world and preach the gospel (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). The church came into existence on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2. Those who were to be saved as a result heard God's word (Romans 10:17), believed it (Hebrews 11:6), repented of their sins (Luke 13:3,5), confessed Jesus Christ as the Son of God (Matthew 10:32,33; Acts 8:36-37), and were baptized for the remission of their sins (Acts 2:38). Upon obeying this, God added them to the church (Acts 2:47). They didn't have to go out and join a church, seeing that there were no other churches to join. Denominations began when people allowed opinion to supersede God's commands. The first denomination to appear was the Catholic Church in 606 a.d., headed by Boniface III. Several others followed afterwards. That's why there's such a mess today. Everyone has an opinion and readily wishes to express it. However, the bible tells us that there is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism (Ephesians 4:4). There is one church and Jesus Christ is the head of it. It's the only church that he built, bought with his own blood, and promised to save in the end. Debates are necessary to assist in putting those on the wrong road onto the right road. Those who have problems with debating are those who either don't know how to defend what they believe, or do not want to bother. Which ever is true, God will have the final say come Judgment Day.

Properly used; it could help folks understand the scriptures better presently. However, the debates that I have witnessed in the past became attacks on the individuals, not on the issues.

The way the Bible is written it is subject to many different interpretations of exactly how it should be understood so naturally they must debate and decide on what is right for them. If they can't agree the minority is free to break off and start their own church. xx

The experience of Christianity is one of comfort, but it is fragile, and if someone questions the assumptions of your faith, then you will defend it, sometimes with force. This is just another testimony that God does not intervene in human affairs.

"Christians, it is needless to say, utterly detest each other. They slander each other constantly with the vilest forms of abuse and cannot come to any sort of agreement in their teaching. Each sect brands its own, fills the head of its own with deceitful nonsense, and makes perfect little pigs of those it wins over to its side."

One man's idea against another man's idea of scripture.

They keep missing this ....

"Do not lean unto YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING."
