When a dog scrubs his butt on the floor what does it mean? My family and I always thought it just itched. But, one day at school I told my friend about it, and she was like, "Oh, you know what that means, don't you?" I lied and said "Yeah." But, now I'm so confused! Please help.

It can be a result of a number of things. 1. Worms - they can be itchy and so you'll need to deworm him with an allwormer that includes tapeworm treatment. You usually do this once every 3 months. 2. Anal gland problems - sometimes anal glands get stuck or clogged up. Anal glands produce this disgusting stinky slimy liquid that lubricates the poop as it comes out - without which the dog has to work really hard to get that stuff out of it. You can express it yourself but sometimes the direction it's coming out in can be a little unpredictable so it might be best to get a professional to help you with it - either a vet or a groomer. You need to wear gloves and squeeze in the right spot and it's all very unsavoury. 3. Skin conditions - these can also cause doggy bum itching - just have a quick look. Usually a skin condition wont always be concentrated around one area though so it's probably not a skin condition.
Course of action: I would definitely try worming my dog (he should also be on a heartwormer in addition to the tapewormer) and maybe have someone check out his anal glands. Anal glands can become blocked and infected. Lots of dogs scoot regularly though and they unblock it all themselves so don't worry about it too much. If he stops pooing take him to the vet.

It could be tapeworms, but usually only if he's doing it constantly. You can look for broken pieces of worms in his poop. When the worms dry out they look like grains of rice.
In most cases the dog has blocked anal glands, he clears them by rubbing his but on the floor. If he doesn't stop after a few days you can have the vet show you how to manually massage his anal glands.

running their bottom along the floor is usually considered either a endoparasite problem such as worms or a anal gland problem where the anal glands become full and do not empty while passing feaces.
each of these are signs of the dog rubbing its bottom, other issues can be a cause as well but these are the most common.
each prob needs to be seen by the vet either for a wormer or for the vet/nurse to express the anal glands.
that wasn't the most useful answer by your friend and i wonder if he/she knows??

Scooting across the floor is a sign of the anal glands are full and in need of a squeezing. It can be done in the doctors office (trust me, you do not want to do this yourself, although you can) and will take about 5 minutes. It'll stop them from itching and feeling uncomfortable.

Its an iratation. It could be iratated from having worms. Just buy some de-worming medicine for dogs at the petstore and give it to him....if it still continues take him to the vet he might have something else wrong with him.
Hope I helped! Have a very Merry Christmas!

I can mean there's an itch on his skin, but not usually. It can mean that the dog has worms. It can mean that the dog's anal glands are full.

A lot of people say it means your dog has worms. I'm sure that's is what your friend meant. My female does that but she doesn't have worms. She was born with chronic yeast infections in her ears and on her back and business area. That is why she scoots.
